STRAND researched Finite Element Modelling (FEM) of lugs under funding from the ADVANTAGE West Midland Technology Fund.
The aim of the research was to develop techniques, procedures and methods to improve the notoriously difficult process of contact analysis involving lugs. A landing gear sub-assembly containing lugs was chosen as the basis for the investigation, and it was modelled in full, including all bushes and pins.
Back-to-back comparisons of the results were made using both NASTRAN and ABAQUS. Initial work using metallic materials was also followed up using composites. A full copy of the findings of the investigation can be supplied on request by e-mailing:
