Front & Centre Spars

STRAND is responsible for the static and F&DT (Fatigue & Damage Tolerance) analysis of the front and centre spars on the A340-500/600 EIS (Entry Into Service), SIA (Singapore Airlines) and HGW (High Gross Weight) aircraft. Two main methods of analysis were applied in the static analysis of the front and centre spars. The generic spar structure shear/compression interaction analysis of the spar web panels and supporting structure is based upon a spreadsheet method with supporting MathCad validation. These spreadsheets use customer supplied FE loads, geometric information and local input loads. Classical hand stressing methods were used on the more detailed parts in conjunction with the customer supplied FE loads.

Fatigue and Damage Tolerance analysis was conducted using customer supplied F&DT programs. STRAND engineers were responsible for creating the input decks that were required by these programs. STRAND has since been asked to support work using this method of analysis both in the UK and abroad.

STRAND has also been involved in the 'Crashworthiness' investigations, Concessions and the production of the 'Structural Repair Manual' for the front and centre spars.

Wing Box

STRAND conducted potential 'Growth Investigations' on the A340 and A330 wing boxes. This task involved determining what impact an increase in aircraft Max Take-Off, Max Landing and Max Zero Fuel weights would have on existing structure. To accomplish this an overall review of the initial check stress calculations of the wingbox, fixed trailing edge (FTE) and fixed leading edge (FLE) was required.  Main Landing Gear Strain gauge readings were correlated against FE model stresses. The FE model stresses were used in the analysis of the main landing gear. This, therefore, formed part of the validation exercise for the stress analysis.

Concessions

STRAND has covered concessions on all wing box & fixed TE (FTE) & LE (FLE) structure on the A340 (Entry Into Service), A330 and A320 family of aircraft, from its offices in Malvern. Some of these concessions activities have included:

1. Evalution of fastener non-conformances for development of rules to support improved disposition of minor deviation and SRM concessions and repairs for AUK Broughton. Analysis covered A330/A340 widebody aircraft for a variety of wing structural non-conformances.Wing analysis covered Spar flanges, Rib feet and skins / covers for fastener oversize, reduction of fasteners spacing and loss of edge distance conditions.

2. In developing the minor deviation rules tools for Auk Broughton, the calculation of fastener strength allowables, parametric lug analysis and edge distance evaulation were automated using Micosaoft excel and VBA code.

STRAND is also currenly supporting A330/340 Main Landing Gear(MLG) production concessions onsite at MD-L.
