MK7 Sea King Developed from the original Sikorsky design, the Westland Sea King was designed primarily as a replacement for the previous Wessex helicopters that had provided sterling service for many years. The Sea King in UK service was principally used to hunt submarines in the frozen waters around the Greenland, Iceland, UK gap. Using both dipping sonar, droppable sonar buoys and magnetic detectors, the Sea King has proven itself able to search, locate and destroy enemy submarines in combat situations. The helicopter was sold to the Royal Navy, the Royal Air Force, the German navy and the Indian navy. The aircraft is perhaps best known as the yellow painted search and rescue helicopter used by the RAF around the UK coastline and mountain ranges, where it has saved countless lives.
